An alkaline earth metal is a chemical element appearing in the second column of the periodic table. The alkaline earth metals have two valence electrons and tend to form divalent cations such as Mg2+ and Ca2+. The alkaline earth metals are beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium.
