A bench press is an exercise move performed by lifting a weighted bar up from the chest and straightening the arms while lying on a bench. It is similar to a floor press but the arms go down further than they would were one lying on the floor.

The bench press targets the pectoralis major muscle and the triceps. Focus can be placed on the pecs by holding the hands farther apart, and on the triceps by shortening the grip.
