A camera is a device that records images. Most modern cameras are digital- they convert incoming light to digital signals and record the digital images on portable disks or flash drives. Before the advent of digital cameras, cameras used light sensitive film to record images. Film exposure created negatives of the actual scene, so the negatives were then used to expose light sensitive paper to create the final photograph. Film can be made in color or black and white.

Word origin

The word camera comes from the term camera obscura, meaning a darkened room- a reference to the early pinhole cameras that used a small hole in a carboard box to focus the light.
