Carbon is the sixth element in the periodic table. Its symbol is C. The form of pure carbon can vary dramatically depending on how it is bonded- diamond, graphite, and soot are pure carbon with different bonds. Carbon's ability to form four covalent bonds lends itself well to forming complex molecules, including most substances that make up life and most plastics.
