Carbon-14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon. It has proven useful in estimating the age of fossils and artifacts using radiocarbon dating. The carbon-14 nucleus has 6 protons and 8 neutrons. Carbon-14 slowly decays into nitrogen 14 via a beta emission.
