A carboxylic acid is a chemical group with one carbon atom double bonded to an oxygen and single bonded to a second oxygen that is then bound to a hydrogen. The hydrogen will dissociate from the rest of the group, making it acidic. The conjugate base of a carboxylic acid is a carboxylate.
