Chemical element

A chemical element is a particular type of atom. One element is distinguished from another based only on the number of protons in its nucleus. A change in the number of neutrons (isotopes) or electrons (ions) in an atom does not change the type of element it is. An element can only change into another element through a nuclear reaction. The elements are represented in the periodic table, which organizes them based on some of their recurring characteristics.
