Coccus

Coccus (plural cocci) describes bacteria that have a round shape. For example, the common staph infection is caused by the bacteria staphylococcus aureus; the coccus suffix indicates that this bacteria takes on a rounded shape.

The other names used to describe bacterial shapes are bacillus and spirillum.
