In biology, cold-blooded is a nonspecific term that refers to animals that do not actively maintain a warm body temperature the way mammals do. Scientists use the more specific terms ectotherm, meaning an organism that does not actively maintain a constant body temperature, and poikilotherm, meaning an organism that has a significantly varying body temperature under normal conditions.
