Photobleaching is the weakening of fluorescent activity due to exposure to light. All fluorophores undergo photobleaching to some degree, sometimes requiring that they be used in a darkroom. New fluorophores have been developed specifically to reduce photobleaching.

Prephotobleaching is the intentional use of photobleaching on a sample prior to tagging to reduce background noise and impurities.
