Pterygoid hamulus

The pterygoid hamulus is a small hook shaped protrusion on the medial pterygoid plate, which is part of the sphenoid bone of the skull.

Purpose

The pterygoid hamulus acts as an anchor point for the tendon of the tensor veli palatini muscle.

Word origin

Hamulus means little hook, being the diminutive of hamus, Latin for hook.
