Sauropoda were large saurischian dinosaurs characterized, in many cases, by very large size. Genera included some of the most famous dinosaur species known, including apatosaurus, brachiosaurus, and diplodocus.

The sauropods had largely disappeared before the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event about 65 million years ago. They existed on every continent on Earth between the late Triassic period and the late Cretaceous period.
