Selenocysteine is an amino acid similar to cysteine but with selenium instead of sulfur. Unlike the standard proteinogenic amino acids, selenocysteine is coded for by a stop codon together with certain secondary structures in the mRNA. When these structures are in the right places, the normal stop codon incorporates a selenocysteine instead.
