A sulfonic acid is a chemical group with one sulfur atom double bonded to two oxygens and single bonded to a third oxygen that is then bound to a hydrogen. The hydrogen will dissociate from the rest of the group, making it acidic. The conjugate base of a sulfonic acid is a sulfonate.
