A suture is a type of joint that allows little motion between the bones. Sutures are found only between the bones of the skull. Similar joints occur elsewhere in the body; they are called fibrous joints - sutures being one type of fibrous joint.

The joints between the bones of the skull are essentially fixed - they are made of dense collagen. At birth, the sutures may have significant give, and then solidify later in life.
